HANC Project Community Partners
Through its HANC project, AAIP supports innovative, culturally sensitive, effective approaches to prevent obesity and improve nutrition and physical activity in American Indian communities. AAIP opened a comprehensive grant opportunity for program proposals that would result in environmental, systematic, and/or policy change so that the results are sustainable, rather than one-time events. Mini-grants were awarded to Tribal Health Departments to adapt and implement the CDC Winnable Battles Strategies and/or The Guide to Community Preventive Services ‘Recommended Strategies’ to engage their community in improving health.
Through creating a community wellness garden and recreation complex, The Indian Child & Family Preservation Program offers different activities for the entire family while encouraging healthy eating habits.
What We Learned through the Community Programs
For the CDC Winnable Battles Strategies and Guide to Community Preventive Services 'Recommended Strategies' to be successful in American Indian and Alaska Native communities, we must implement and recognize these four key areas:
Barriers such as financial, environment, and daily routine challenges must be addressed alongside obesity prevention efforts.
Policy, systems, and environmental change is not ‘enough,’ you must provide education alongside these changes.
- Cultural Strengths
Include entire family and community in your project. Cultural and traditional components positively impact project’s success.
- Native Pride
It's time to reclaim our relationship with food and physical activity and to live and promote our ancestors’ way of life for the health of future generations.
Previously Awarded Community Programs
Our partners are the key to our success. The Healthy Active Native Communities project is proud to partners roving the health of Native communities. Keep up the great work! Together, we have a positive impact on the health of our community.
